Brooksby teaching apiary...

Is a resource of Leicestershire & Rutland Bee Keepers Association, close to Brooksby Agricultural college and is the centre of the Associations activities in the North of the counties of Leicestershire and Rutland. During the summer months.  We meet every Tuesday evening at 7:30pm from March to July.  It is also used for special training days and occasional social events.

For Beginners

Teaching in progress Generally there is a buoyant beginner's class which takes raw beginners through a training course of theory and practical lessons that lasts about eighteen weeks and consists of a mix of practical hands on training and informal lectures.  There tends to be a relaxed discussion over coffee answering beginners concerns and worries.  Every year there is are a few beginners that for one reason or another already have a hive or two of bees and these tend give rise to problems ahead of the training so a few words of friendly advice over a coffee from the associations 'experts' (hah) never goes amiss.

We can sometimes supply beginners who have joined the association with reconditioned British National hive equipment and sometimes our members can supply colonies or nucs of bees. The association offers mentoring and support to a beginner from one of our experienced members among our team of local advisors.

For Intermediary beekeepers

Our second year beekeepers and beyond go to an nearby out apiary known as Palmers Barn where they grow in experience and tend to return for a coffee to Brooksby towards the evening's end and join in discussions with the beginners.

And more Advanced Stuff

We also have within the association instrumental insemination equipment and microscopes which are occasionally used to demonstrate to interested members and we annually raise selected queens for use and sale to members.
